Do You Have Comprehensive?
When discussing auto insurance, it's a pretty common question - "Do you have Comprehensive?" If you're considering how much coverage you should have and/or are wondering how Comprehensive works, here's the skinny.
Comprehensive pays for damage to or loss of your car (minus your deductible) due to perils such as fire, theft and vandalism - but not collision. In some states, this coverage also guarantees glass repair or replacement in your vehicle and, if your car is stolen, may pay for a rental car if your car is still missing after 48 hours.
Your comprehensive premium can be reduced by as much as 35% by installing a qualifying security device. It can be further lowered by choosing a deductible of $1,000 or more. Your comprehensive premium may be increased or in some cases coverage may be denied if you drive a high theft vehicle without a qualifying anti-theft or recovery device.

If your car's value is very low, the wise choice may be to NOT buy comprehensive (unless required to by a lender). If your car has exceptional value due to its condition (classic and antique cars) you should have it appraised and properly insured before declining this coverage.
