Information for new riders
If you are a new rider buying motorcycle insurance for the first time, you may find these tips helpful.
The growth in the motorcycle industry is mainly with middle-aged Baby-Boomers who are attracted to riding for many reasons - perhaps they always wanted a motorcycle but never had the chance. The tremendous growth of Harley Davidson over the last 20 years has been due to middle-aged riders identifying with the All-American, H-D appeal and lifestyle. Novice middle-aged riders are much more likely to be mature and responsible on the road and aware of potential danger.
On the other hand, 20 year olds learning to ride on their first superbike (read "Do you ride a super bike or go to the track?") are statistically more likely to be involved in an accident. The risk of an accident and a claim translates to relatively higher premiums for younger, newer riders who choose to ride a sport bike.
What options do you have? All new riders can reduce their premiums by taking an accredited training course (check out Motorcycle Safety Foundation's training courses), and riding an older, smaller, less expensive bike. All else being equal, insuring an older cruiser will cost less than getting coverage for your Hayabusa. In addition to less expensive coverage, an older bike may also reduce the risk of theft, allowing you to drop the comprehensive coverage.

Having a large deductible will also reduce your rate. If you increase your deductible to $1,000 you are agreeing to pay the first $1,000 of a claim that is considered your fault. This decision on coverage may have a subtle effect on your riding style and approach: you will have to pay for any minor spills, but you can ride with comfort, knowing your insurance will cover any true catastrophes. It's a win-win for you and the insurance company, and your annual premium will drop accordingly.
